Building a Clear Authentic Brand is for Christian business owners in trades and service industries who want to lead businesses that are healthy from the inside out, not just profitable on paper. It runs on two pillars: purpose-driven work, the conviction that your business is a calling, and organizational health, the practical work of aligning your people, your processes, and your messaging. The two are inseparable, and that's what every episode comes back to.
Most business owners know something is off before they know what it is. The marketing isn't converting. The team keeps hiring wrong. The culture feels fragile. The default move is to fix the surface, new website, new ads, new process. But the root problem is almost never any of those things. It's a lack of internal clarity. When a business doesn't have a firm foundation, a clear identity, aligned values, people in the right roles, everything built on top of it is just expensive maintenance.
This episode is the origin story. I trace my path from a credit union teller who stumbled into an Amway conference at 18, to 15 years of building a web design agency with my husband Josh, to working inside a 70-year-old gas and welding distribution company, to burning out, to starting over with a different foundation. A foundation build on authenticity, identity, and faith.
- Most businesses that need better marketing actually need better clarity first. Fix the root and the surface problems start solving themselves.
- Letting your business become your identity is a slow disaster. The rise and fall of your revenue shouldn't be the rise and fall of who you are.
- The world's playbook and God's playbook for business are not the same. You have to decide which one you're actually running.
- Your employees go home to families and the way you lead affects those families.
- Authenticity in business isn't a branding strategy. It's the inside matching the outside. You can't market your way to it.
- Purpose-driven work and organizational health can't be separated. You can't fulfill a calling with a broken organization, and you can't build a healthy organization without knowing why it exists.
How do I build a business that reflects my faith without it feeling forced?
The tension is real. Most business advice treats faith as a personal thing that stays separate from how you run the company. But if you actually believe God designed you for something specific, with specific gifts, for a specific purpose, then your business is part of that. It can't stay in a silo.
What that looks like practically isn't putting Bible verses on your website. It's making decisions based on what you actually believe instead of what fear or the market is telling you. It's hiring people whose wiring fits the role, not just whose resume looks right. It's building a culture where people feel valued and go home better than they came in. It's being the same person on the outside of the business as you are when nobody's watching.
Your business, your work, your personality, your marriage, your time, your family, it is all intertwined. And I know that because I've lived it.
Amy Dardis, Episode 1The businesses I've watched struggle the most aren't the ones that lacked strategy. They lacked clarity about who they were and why they were doing what they were doing.
Why does my business feel misaligned even when things are going okay on the surface?
Because okay on the surface and healthy on the inside are two completely different things. You can have revenue, you can have clients, you can have a team, and still feel like the business is running you instead of the other way around. That's usually a clarity problem.
When a business lacks internal clarity, a clear identity, defined values, people in roles that fit them, it shows up in everything. The marketing feels off even when it's technically fine. The hiring keeps producing the wrong people. The culture drifts. You make decisions reactively instead of from conviction. None of those problems get solved by adding another tactic.
The root issue is almost always this: the business was built from the outside in. From what the market wanted, what competitors were doing, what the latest strategy promised. A clear authentic brand gets built from the inside out, from who you actually are, what you actually believe, and what you're actually called to do.
What is purpose-driven work and how is it different from just having a mission statement?
A mission statement is a sentence. Purpose-driven work is a conviction you make decisions from.
Purpose-driven work is the idea that you are here for a specific reason, that God designed you with specific gifts and put you in your industry for a purpose beyond the P&L. Your employees, your customers, your community: your business touches all of them. That touch is either building something or it isn't.
The difference shows up in how you hire. In whether you'll make a hard call that costs you money in the short run because it's the right thing to do. In whether your team knows why they're doing what they're doing beyond collecting a paycheck. Mission statements can be faked. Purpose-driven work shows up in behavior.
Work is not just somewhere you go and clock in so you can make enough money to pay your bills. Work is the opportunity to develop the gifting inside of you and to contribute it in a meaningful way.
Amy Dardis, Episode 1What is organizational health and why does it matter for a small trades or service business?
Organizational health is what it looks like when a business actually functions the way it's supposed to. Clear vision. Right people in right roles. Honest messaging that reflects what you actually deliver. A culture where people feel valued, know what they stand for, and go home better because of where they work.
For a trades or service business, HVAC, construction, landscaping, distribution, this isn't abstract. It's the difference between a team that shows up and executes and a team you're constantly managing around. It's the difference between hiring someone who thrives and hiring someone who costs you more than their paycheck.
The reason I care about this is that I've seen what happens when a business gets it right. The employees go home and are better husbands, better wives, better parents. The customers feel the difference. The owner stops being the ceiling of what the business can do. That's not just a nice outcome, that's the actual point of building something.

Hello and welcome to the very first episode of the Building a Clear Authentic Brand Podcast. I'm your host, Amy Dardis, and it's a relief to finally be recording this. It's been a long time in the making, but before I dive into the story behind this podcast and what you can expect, let me first introduce myself. I'm Amy. I'm a wife, I'm a mother, I'm a business owner, and I'm a Christ follower.
My husband, Josh, and I have been married for 15 years, and we've been in business together pretty much our entire marriage. Business is actually one of the things that brought us together. We happened to have run into each other at an Amway conference.
When I was about to graduate high school and looking at colleges and considering what to do with my future, I thought I should go to college because that's just what I thought I was supposed to do. But my dad was like, you shouldn't go and invest in something and pay for something that you're not sure why you're doing it. So I took some time, lived at home, worked a nine to five job as a teller at a credit union, and ended up getting invited to this Amway conference.
I was very reluctant, very hesitant, very cautious about this whole thing. But I prayed and prayed and prayed about it, and God was like, yes, you should go. So I went. And that was the very first time in my life anyone had ever talked to me about entrepreneurship or what it meant to run a business.
At this conference, people were talking about being passionate about what they did and not living for the weekend because you enjoyed Monday through Friday so much, and having control and freedom over your time. That was the exact opposite of how I had been feeling in my full-time job. And they talked about building a business with your spouse, instead of so many marriages getting divorced because they were leading two separate lives, the idea of working together towards something. This message just planted a seed in me.
My husband and I got married a short time after that, and we knew we wanted to start a business. So we ended up starting a web design and marketing agency. He would build the websites and do the maintenance and the development, and I was the sales and marketing role. On and off over that 15-year span, there were periods where I had other corporate jobs, and then periods where I was full-time in the business.
That was a journey itself of figuring out what it was like to build our own business from scratch, what it was like to figure out our own brand, to build relationships and connections, to market, to lead gen, to balance family and kids and marriage and faith with business. And having all the ups and downs, having business completely consume me, having business become an idol in my life, learning how to surrender control and really give it to God.
In that process, we were also working with clients to get to know them and understand their story and their process and their messaging. And I genuinely was so fascinated by the stories of other entrepreneurs, their own journey and their own struggles, how they got started, what made them different from their competitor. It became really important to me to help these businesses communicate authentically and honestly about what made them unique and different.
But it was also super important to me that whatever messaging I was helping them put out into the marketplace, they were actually living up to it. I didn't want to help someone say they did business with integrity and trust and honesty, and then find out they actually didn't. So this idea of a healthy organization, a healthy business from the inside out, I became very passionate about that. It shouldn't just be surface level. It's not just about what you say. It's about the follow-through, the alignment, the consistency, and the authenticity.
Businesses affect people. People are the business. And our life is about people and relationships and serving God. I believe that God has a plan and a purpose for our life, and he designs us uniquely with specific gifting and specific passions and abilities. We're supposed to be in roles that use the giftings he gave us. I've seen the impact that comes from that in my own life, finally finding my own role in business through my God-given gifts.
I found myself so passionate about these things, this intertwining of faith and purpose and business, but never knowing how to bring them all together. In the marketing and web design space, I felt like I was being put into a box that wasn't authentic to me. That in order to come across as professional and credible, I had to stay within this box of marketing and branding and SEO and Facebook ads and Google ads, things that felt surface level, and not what I actually cared about.
I realized that the root issue is when businesses come needing help with their marketing, needing a new website, needing more lead gen, it's because they lack internal clarity. This internal alignment and firm foundation that says, this is who I am, this is my brand, this is what we stand for, this is what we're about. And when we could help figure those things out, that's really where the transformation happened. That's the catalyst for better marketing and better decision making in the long run.
So this podcast has been long in the making because God has been forming me and transforming me and teaching me and molding me through the trials and through the fire. Coming to a place where I learned how to be authentic, authentically myself as an individual, and authentic in my business and in my brand.
This podcast is for business owners who are Christian business owners in people-driven industries that want to lead God-honoring businesses, knowing that business is not a silo. Your business, your work, your personality, your marriage, your time, your family, it is all intertwined. And I know that because I've lived it. I've seen the destruction that comes when I've put my business above everything else. And I've seen the life and the blessing from it when I've done it the right way, when I've let God lead, when I've surrendered my control and my ambition, and when I've quieted the noise from the outside world.
If I have struggled with anything, and it's a lot of things, one of the top things has been allowing the world, especially in business, to influence how I did business without being firm and rooted and grounded in my own identity, my own brand, my own faith, my own security of knowing what my purpose was. I have been blown and tossed by the wind. I have tried a thousand different strategies. I have been burnt out and overwhelmed. I have fallen and failed. But then I have been pulled out of that. I have been shaped through that, and I have planted deep roots through that.
This podcast really is focused on two key pillars: purpose-driven work and organizational health. Purpose-driven work is this idea that we are called on purpose and for a purpose. Your business is a calling. You're here for a specific time here on earth, and God wants you to use your specific skill sets, your personality, your experiences, and your business to make a difference, to contribute, to make an impact in this world on the lives of people. Your employees, your family, your community, your customers.
Purpose-driven work is understanding the wrestling we have with the world's way of doing business versus God's way of doing business. I've been in that season where my whole identity was wrapped up in my business. The rise and fall of my business determined how I felt about myself. I've been a mom who put business before marriage, before kids, and it pretty much ruined both of them for a time. But by the grace of God, he's taught me how to prioritize and balance these things, to have a wonderful, thriving marriage even though we are in business together, and to be a fully present and engaged mom.
The other pillar is organizational health, running a healthy, strong, thriving business. Having clarity in your vision, your purpose, your brand. Being authentic to who you are, to who God created you to be and what he intended for your business. How do we align our people and our processes and our messaging? How do we make sure we have the right people in our organization to carry out the vision that God has given us?
When we use our business as a way to develop our people, to help them contribute in meaningful ways, our employees get to go to work and feel valued and feel like they're contributing and feel challenged and feel inspired, and they go home and are better husbands, wives, mothers, fathers because of it. Because of our impact. Because of how our business operates. It gets to bless the lives of our employees, their families, our customers, and the communities in which we live.
So these two things are intertwined. We can't separate one from the other. This podcast dives into these different topics and what practical implementation looks like, while never ignoring the underlying foundation of people and purpose. Every minute of our day matters and our days are numbered. So let's not live a life where we're wasting our God-given potential, our God-given opportunities, our God-given calling.
Work is not just somewhere you go and clock in for a specific amount of time so you can make enough money to pay your bills. Work is the opportunity to develop the gifting inside of you and to contribute it in a meaningful way. And that is what I want to bring to the surface and put more attention around, these things and how they get to permeate every aspect of our life.
