Divided loyalty is the root of brand misalignment. When you're looking to the world for your business strategy and also trying to follow God's calling on your life, the result is what James 1 describes: unsettled as a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind, unstable in everything you do. You can rewrite your website twenty times a year, follow every expert, test every framework, and still never find peace because the problem isn't your messaging. It's your master. Who is Lord over your business? Are you stewarding what God gave you, or are you building it the world's way? The tension between those two will eat you alive from the inside out until you choose.
15 years of watching the same pattern play out over and over: following the world's frameworks, rewriting the website, pivoting the message, looking at what the experts said, and never finding peace. Not because the strategy was wrong, but because the loyalty was divided. The formula worked for clients. It never worked for this brand. And the reason it never worked is because it was never what God was asking for.
The episode moves through the full arc: starting the agency in 2011 with no idea who they were yet, the burnout that hit in summer 2025, the six weeks of laying everything down and waiting, the podcast that started out of obedience in September 2025, getting off social media to hear God's voice and develop an uninfluenced authentic voice, and finally writing messaging in a way that actually felt true. Two passages from Scripture are the anchor: James 1:5-8 on divided loyalty, and Matthew 6:24 on serving two masters.
- The reason you feel like a fraud writing your own content is not that you're bad at marketing. It's that the formula isn't aligned with how God made you or what he's calling you to do.
- Burnout is not failure. It's often God's grace. The doors that didn't open in the season you wanted them to were the mercy of a God who could see you weren't ready yet.
- Waiting is not wasted. Laying it all down, stopping striving, writing, reading, praying, and asking God what to do next: that's not giving up. That's the reset that makes everything after it possible.
- Get off social media long enough to hear your own voice. You cannot develop an authentic brand if you're constantly absorbing other people's styles, formats, and frameworks. The comparison is killing the clarity.
- James 1:5-8: a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.
- Matthew 6:24: No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other, you cannot serve both God and money.
- The tension you feel is not in vain. God is using it to ask you: who is your master? Where is your loyalty? Is this your business, or is it his? That question is uncomfortable. It's also the only one that matters.
Why does my brand never feel right no matter how many times I rewrite it?
Because you're following someone else's formula for who you are. The lead-with-the-problem, agitate-it, talk-about-the-solution, talk-about-your-credibility framework works. But when you're writing your own brand through that lens, and it doesn't match how God actually made you or how you show up in real relationships, it's going to feel wrong. And you're going to keep rewriting it because something is off, but you don't know what.
The words aren't the problem. What I kept doing was following the same formula with different ingredients. A new headline, a new angle, a new niche. But the formula was never what God was asking me to do. It was not how I built relationships in person or how I led conversations. It was just how I knew how to represent myself on a website. Within that disconnect, I could never find rest.
The fix is not a better formula. It's writing from your actual story, your actual voice, the actual things you believe and have lived through, and letting that be enough. That feels very risky when you've been trained to optimize for conversion. But conversion-optimized content and identity-true content are often two different things. What God's asking for is the second one.
What does divided loyalty between God and the world actually look like in a business?
It looks like believing you're called to a kingdom-minded business and then spending your days looking at what the latest business expert says you should be doing. Optimizing everything for the world's metrics: reach, revenue, conversion, growth.
James 1:5-8 describes it exactly. It ends with: their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do. That instability is not a discipline problem or a strategy problem. It's a loyalty problem. You're trying to serve two masters, and because you're trying to serve both, you can't fully commit to either one. The result is constant pivoting, constant comparison, constant rewriting, and chaos on the inside even when things look okay on the outside.
Matthew 6:24 puts it plainly: No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other, you cannot serve both God and money. The world's way of doing business is ultimately structured around money. If you're following God, what does that mean for your brand, your messaging, what projects you take? Those are not the same answer.
For 15 years, I have been having divided loyalty. For 15 years, I have been trying to follow God and follow the world. I have never been at peace because I've always been trying to serve two masters.
Amy Dardis, Episode 52How do you find your authentic brand voice when you've been following frameworks for so long?
You have to remove the inputs shaping your voice before you can hear what your voice actually is. I got off social media. Stopped listening to podcasts, stopped reading business books. Not because those things are bad, but because I was too susceptible to letting them shape how I showed up. I needed to find out: what comes out of me without any outside influence?
Then I just talked. Started the podcast without a camera, without a plan, without a brand. Just turned on the mic and started telling the story. The failures, the pivots, the burnout, the wrestling, the things I'd put before God, how I'd doubted and stalled and been afraid. Episode after episode, with no idea who specifically I was talking to, just knowing I needed to start.
Through that process, the voice started to take shape. I was finally doing what I'd always deeply wanted to do, in the way I actually do it. Then I looked at the transcripts, saw what kept surfacing, and started writing my messaging from that. It was the first time in 15 years that what I said in person, what I wrote, and what I believed all pointed at the same thing.
What do you do when you're burned out and have no clarity left?
You stop. In summer 2025, I burned out hard. Tired, devastated, discouraged. I didn't understand why nothing was working. Now I look back grateful: God did not open those doors because I was not ready. Emotionally, spiritually, mentally. He cares more about our character than he does our comfort.
So I laid it all down. Stopped working completely. Stopped striving. Started writing every day, reading the word every day, praying every day. And I said: God, I don't know what to do. I'm so lost, I am so broken, I have nothing left, I have no vision, I have no confidence or clarity in myself at all. And I'm going to sit here and wait until you tell me what to do.
I wanted that to take a weekend. It took six weeks. But the fog began to clear, and what came back was the same direction that had been there for years: tell your story, talk about the things you want to talk about, do it in a way that aligns with your wiring and your gifting. The breakthrough wasn't a new strategy. It was the return to the thing God had been saying all along.
God, I don't know what to do. I'm so lost, I am so broken, I have nothing left, I have no vision, I have no confidence or clarity in myself at all. And I'm going to sit here and wait until you tell me what to do.

This episode is about the struggle between showing up the way we think we should versus showing up the way God is actually calling us to show up. A lifelong struggle, especially as an entrepreneur. Josh and I started our web design and marketing agency in 2011 with no idea what we were doing as a business or as people. Young, still figuring ourselves out, figuring out our marriage, figuring out life, and then adding a business on top of that. For many years, it was a process of figuring out identity: who God had created us to be, understanding our wiring and our gifting and our calling, who we were in Christ, who we were as individuals. That journey was messy. A lot of pivoting, a lot of looking at what everybody else was doing in their web agency and thinking, oh, that worked for them, so we should try that.
Getting into business wasn't something we were looking for. We felt led, felt called. Those were the doors God opened. As I became more aware of my giftings, I was also growing deeper in my own walk and wrestling with what it looks like to be a Christian running a business. If God is Lord over my life, if I want to surrender my will to his, what does that look like in business? How does that change the decisions I make, the way I show up, the projects we choose, how we structure things? What I wrestled with wasn't what's the right way or the best way, but what way is God asking me to do it? And I struggled with that. I always felt torn between two worlds, almost torn between two versions of myself.
I was really great at in-person sales because I wasn't trying to sell. I was just trying to build relationships and ask questions. But every time I tried to write my website, create content, record videos, a different side of me showed up. I didn't know how to be human. I didn't know how to be myself. In my mind, that's not what worked. You lead with the problem, agitate it, talk about the ideal customer, talk about the solution, talk about the process, talk about your credibility. That was the formula. And I got stuck in it deeply. Not only did I follow it when I wrote my website, I followed it when I wrote every client's website for 15 years. And it worked really well for their businesses. But when I went to write my own, I felt like a fraud. I felt like an imposter. It ate at me. So I kept redoing it again and again and again and again, but always following the same formula.
In 2023, I felt the stirring that God had laid on my heart to start something new. He was stirring up the things I had always deeply desired to talk about: faith, purpose, identity, business, entrepreneurship, all of the ups and downs. The things that had gnawed at me, that had eaten me alive at times. And I said no at first. I'm a mess. I'm working full time, I have a comfortable safe job, I don't want this other thing. And he was like, Nope, it's time. So in fall of 2023, I started a YouTube channel. Just sitting down and turning on a webcam, just getting into the habit of starting to talk. No brand, no business, no monetization. Just an outlet to get this welling-up energy out of me. I did it out of obedience, out of surrender: God, if this is what you want, I'm just going to sit down and do it.
In 2024, God planted the seed for Clear Authentic Brands. The brand was born and the business idea started to take root. The name came. The idea: helping other businesses learn how to be authentic and clear based on their unique wiring, their story, God's calling on their life, and helping them find alignment with their people, their process, their message, their operations. Only while that message and that dream had been planted, I had yet to fully figure out how to do it myself.
In November 2024, God called us out of Montana and to Alaska: go all in on this new brand, this new business. And what followed was this last year and a half of wrestling with how do I show up authentically? It's been three steps forward, two steps back. Peeling off layer by layer, going back to my own identity: who is God in my life, how has he shaped me, who has he called me to be? Because all of these things are connected. How I run my business affects my life at home, and what happens at home flows into my business. Business is filled with people, and people are humans, and identity and gifting and wiring and relationships and work are all one thing.
At the beginning of this journey in Alaska, I started out doing what I knew: reverting back to old ruts. In real life I was starting over with a clean slate, creating new friendships, embracing the life God wanted. But in business, I was still copying the behaviors and customs of the world, still following the world's ways, still looking at what all the experts were saying, trying this framework and that approach. My content reflects that: all over the place publicly with this brand. Operating out of fear, operating out of scarcity, operating out of doubt, striving in my own strength, headed straight for burnout because I was not relying on God.
Summer 2025. I burned out hard. Hit a wall. So tired, so devastated, so discouraged. I didn't understand why the doors hadn't opened, why nothing was working. Now I look back and I'm like, thank God you did not open any doors at that time. I was not ready emotionally, spiritually, mentally. God cares more about our character than he does our comfort. So I laid it all down. Stopped working completely, stopped striving. Started writing every day, reading the word every day, praying every day, and just being like: God, I don't know what to do. I'm so lost, I am so broken, I have nothing left, I have no vision, I have no confidence or clarity in myself at all. I wanted that process to take a weekend. It took six weeks. But little by little the fog began to clear, and I started getting the same affirmation, the same promptings, the same direction I'd been getting for years: tell your story, talk about the things you want to talk about, talk about business, talk about faith, talk about identity, talk about purpose and calling, and do it in a way that aligns with your natural wiring and your natural gifting.
That was when I felt God saying: start the podcast. So I started the Building a Clear Authentic Brand podcast in September 2025. Turned on the mic, didn't even use a camera, just started telling the journey. The marketing agency, working for the gas and welding distributor, God calling us out of Montana to Alaska, the ups and downs, how I've put other things before God, how I've doubted, how I've stalled, how I've been afraid. Episode after episode trying to be like: okay, God, what are you placing on my heart? What is the thing I'm supposed to share? And through that process I started processing out loud, and it became the most authentic content I had ever created. Finally feeling peace: I'm doing what I've deeply desired to do for years. I don't know what it turns into, I don't know how I create a business around this. But I'm finally sharing authentically.
When I started the podcast, I also felt convicted to get off social media. Something I'd wrestled with for years. Journal entries of hating the pressure, hating the influence it had on my life, fasting from it and feeling so much better. God's message: get off, for two reasons. One: listen to my voice, get all the other noise and distractions out of the way. Two: develop your own voice. See what comes up, see how you start to share, develop it, know that it is your voice, it is your story, not someone else's. You have to do it without comparing yourself. So I wasn't listening to other podcasts, other books, nothing business-related from anyone, because I didn't want it to influence this authentic version of me. The podcast helped me find that voice. Then I started analyzing all the episodes, looking at transcripts, seeing what came to the surface, and comparing that with the disconnect between how I was still writing my website and my bios. Realizing: I sound like two different people.
This is the clarity-alignment-accountability framework. Find clarity in who you are, in who God created you to be, in your gifting, in your story. I started looking at my own story, my writing, my journal entries, the experiences I had, because God gives us everything we need. He's orchestrated it all. Then comes alignment: aligning your people, your process, your messaging. Aligning what I say and what I do with who I believe God is calling me to be. And I started to write my messaging differently. Through story. This is what I've lived through, this is what I believe, this is what God has developed inside of me, this is how I help people today. And then an invitation: if this is something you also find yourself in, here's how we can work together. That felt very weird. The world says to do it a different way. And that's where it hits: where is my loyalty? What type of business am I building? Is this for me, for the world, or for God?
Two verses have convicted me of this. James 1:5-8 (NLT): if you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do. I read this verse in the fall and it convicted me: I am as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. All the rewrites, all the iterations, all the pivoting. But then I read it again recently and was struck differently: a person with divided loyalty, divided between God and the world. That's the reason I'm unsettled. I am looking to the world for my business strategies: the experts, the frameworks, the funnels, the lead gen, what everybody else is doing. Instead of choosing where my loyalty actually is.
Matthew 6:24: No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other, you cannot serve both God and money. The world's way of doing business is ultimately about money. If I'm following God, what does that mean for my branding, my messaging, how I show up? For 15 years I've had divided loyalty. For 15 years I've been trying to follow God and follow the world. And that tension has torn at me from the inside out. I have never been at peace. And so I come back to this over and over again. I'm not the only one. There are other entrepreneurs and business owners feeling this too. This internal confusion of I'm supposed to do this, but I do it and I don't feel peace about it. And God is saying: who is your master? Where is your loyalty? I created you, I called you, I gave you this dream, I want you to do what I'm asking you to do, the way I'm asking you to do it.
If you're on this journey too, if you're also wrestling, if you feel this, you're not alone. But I don't believe you're feeling that tension in vain. God is wanting to get your attention. He's asking you to do something different, asking you to lay it down, asking you to figure out where your loyalty is and who is Lord over your life, who is Lord over your business. Is your business yours? Or is it something God gave you? Are you stewarding it? What posture do you have toward it? Maybe it's time to wrestle with that. And know that it's not just make this one decision and everything will be fine. It's a process, it's a journey. But if you're on that journey, I am too. We can go on it together.
